Instructional: Learn to Skate and Intro to Hockey
New Player Information Guidebook
Masco Youth Hockey offers beginning skaters three different instructional sessions beginning with basic skating in the fall and progressing to instructional hockey games in the spring. Each of the three instructional programs consists of 8 weeks of on ice instruction. The first session, Learn to Skate, begins in October; the second session, Intro to Hockey, begins in January; and the third session, Spring Challenge, begins in April. Skaters may attend any or all sessions. Sign-ups are on a first come, first served basis. Sessions do fill up so you should sign up early.
Learn to Skate (LTS)
In the Learn to Skate Program, the emphasis is on the development of basic skating skills and a lot of hand holding. Volunteer parent coaches are assigned different skating drills at stations located around the rink. Even if the child is not interested in playing ice hockey, the Learn to Skate session offers Tri-Town youth the opportunity to learn how to skate with their friends and friendly adult volunteers.

Intro to Hockey (ITH)
For those interested in hockey, the Intro to Hockey program introduces stick handling, passing, shooting and other individual hockey skills along with additional skating instruction. The program starts in January and runs for 8 weeks with 2 additional weeks of scrimmages.
Spring ChallengeSpring Challenge concentrates on preparing the child for the next level of hockey. Emphasis is on the team environment, positions, changing lines and other aspects of game situations. Spring Challenge also helps the parent in making the right decision on whether the child is ready for the next level of hockey.
Completion of Learn to Skate and Intro to Hockey (or other towns' equivalent program) are recommended for a player to advance to the House League. A player should complete at least one season in the House League (or other towns' equivalent program) before being eligible for a Travel Team.
